Remember learning to grip the wheel at 10 and 2 in Drivers Ed class? Well, the rules have changed. Ergonomics experts now suggest another position. Here are some tips for staying safe and comfortable behind the wheel:
- Sit slightly reclined with your shoulders resting comfortably on the back of the seat.
- Sit as far back from the steering wheel as you can without compromising control of the vehicle.
- Sit so that you are able to pivot your right foot from the accelerator to the brake pedal without lifting your heel from the floor.
- Place your hands on the outside rim of the steering wheel where a clock's arms would be at 9 and 3 o'clock. Having your arms slightly lower minimizes risk of injury to arms, hands, and fingers if the airbags deploy.
